Match Play Rules
In match play, each hole is valued at one point. You can win, lose or draw the hole. At the end of 9 holes, the player with the most points wins. Even though each hole is one point, be sure to keep accurate strokes as well.
If you are tied, the player with the lower overall score is the winner. If the players are still tied, you refer to the score on #5 and the lower score there, is the winner.
Our flights are determined by your handicap. You will be playing others that have about the same handicap so there will be no strokes given for difference in handicaps. In the event you do come across someone with a different handicap or average score you may consider negotiating strokes for the respective round. Let's say you are in a match where one golfer averages 45 (9 above par) and the other 52 (16 above par) on their Waveland rounds; the difference is seven strokes. The lower scoring golfer may choose to offer up to 7 strokes for the round granted by hole difficulty in order to make the round more competitive (7 being gracious - 3 to 5 more ideal).
Based on the course scorecard below, if the golfer with the 45 average granted 4 strokes to the golfer with the 52 average, the strokes would be awarded on holes 5 (#1), 2 (#2), 4 (#3) and 7 (#4). Whereas # signifies handicap by difficulty ranking of hole; on each of these holes the person receiving the handicap would have a stroke removed from their score on each respective hole. If the regular scores resulted in a tie on any of these holes, the one stroke handicap would make the 52 average golfer the winner of the respective hole.
Please remember that pace of play should not be affected, ready golf and continuous putting is still the way we play. Unless the hole is at stake, "give" a putt if it is inside 18 inches.
Be sure to report your scores to Mike Lapchick or Curt Wiley immediately after your round. If you do not see either of them please email Curt at curtwiley52@yahoo.com.
